The decision by government to register landlords countrywide and slap between 20 per cent and 30 per cent tax on their faces is only preparing the country for difficult times.
In my view, this tax has been imposed on all Ugandans. For example, what happens when landlords countrywide increase rents? Business community will be forced to increase commodity prices; civil servants and other workers will demand for high wages.
Lack of fairness has been government’s biggest weakness as far as tax issues are concerned. For instance, you can’t exempt a Member of Parliament from taxes and injure or kill a boda boda cyclist for not paying taxes.
What strikes me most is that many MPs have remained tight lipped as if these decisions are being made in drinking joints and in state of stupor.
