In Summary
  • RAV4 is roomier and feels sturdier and safer than the smaller Toyota Raum. You can make some behavioral and driving choices that will make your RAV4 more fuel efficient and narrow the fuel economy gap with the Raum.
  • You can fuel the RAV4 with more efficient Shell Fuel Save petrol, servicing and tuning the car regularly to make the engine run lighter and efficiently and driving more sensibly such as less aggressive acceleration and braking, avoid prolonged idling in traffic jams, driving on good tyres and selecting your journey route carefully to avoid traffic congestion.

Hi Paul, I want to buy a car. I earn Shs2m per month and my preference is high cars. I am torn between the feeling of owning a high car and being realistic. My other options are a Rav4 short chassis or Raum. These bring me close to what I want. However, I would want to know if the Rav4 short chassis has the same consumption rate as the long chassis. Secondly, how economical is the Raum in terms of fuel consumption? Liz

Hello Liz, you must have some good reasons why you feel comfortable with the short chassis Toyota RAV4 first generation.
The Toyota RAV4 short chassis has better fuel economy compared to the long chassis RAV4 which is longer and heavier which puts a bigger fuel toll on the engine.

The Toyota Raum has better fuel economy because it is smaller, lighter and more aero dynamic.
Raum also has a newer generation more efficient fuel injection system.
However the short chassis RAV4 has got some practical advantages: good ground clearance, all-wheel drive so you can’t get stuck on a muddy road, a higher command driving position which gives you good visibility on the road.
