Squad. Number of player named by Coach Tolbert Onyango for the July 20-22 showpiece squad.
KAMPALA. In a matter days, the Rugby Sevens Cranes will depart on a 19 hour flight to San Francisco, USA to partake in the seventh edition of the Rugby Sevens World Cup also known as the Melrose Cup.
Coach Tolbert Onyango wielded the axe as he had some tough decisions to make while naming his 12 man squad for the July 20-22 showpiece. As quick scan through the side finds the name Justin Kimono as part of Onyango`s trusted troops for the USA trip, something nobody would have predicted a few months back.
Kimono, who only made full recovery from a knee surgery less than a year back, has a hit the ground running hard with solid performances at both club and country. And with Lawrence Sebubila, an integral figure in Onyango’s plans out with a broken hand, Kimono was always going to be a suitable replacement.
“He’s strong and quick on his feet. He’s been training with us in the conditioning phase and we believe he’ll bring different dynamics to our game,” Onyango told Daily Monitor after naming his World Cup side.
Michael Wokorach keeps the captaincy with namesake Phillip Wokorach assisting him. Ivan Magomu that much desired call up after hinting months ago that he would do all it takes to play at the Rugby Sevens World Cup. Desire Ayera, the youngest member of the side at 20 seems to have finally settled and World Cup experience will come as a bonus to his young and promising career.
