The side resumed training on Sunday and with plans of having four two-hour sessions a week with focus on a few areas, Onyango wants his side to improve before gracing the big stage
Being part of the Rugby Cranes team that won the Africa Cup in Nairobi last month does not guarantee one’s slot in the side for the upcoming HSBC World Seven Series.
Coach Tolbert Onyango has warned that changes will be made to make the team stronger for Uganda’s appearances at the lucrative series in Dubai and Cape Town this December.
“Not everyone from the Africa Cup winning team is certain of a place on the team because am looking for continuous improvement,” Onyango told Daily Monitor. To the 12-man squad, Onyango has so far added two players, Asuman Mugerwa and Byron Otekayot, both forwards, with more to be included over the next two months. In the aftermath of beating Namibia 38-19 to win the Africa Cup 7s, Onyango had revealed that he would add four players to the side.
“At the moment, I have included Otekayot who is picking up really fast. Asuman has also joined us,” he added. Mugerwa was part of the provisional team. “We are still training and it’s hard to know the number of changes I’ll make but it will all depend on the performance at the end of the nine weeks training,” stated the Kenyan born coach.
The side resumed training on Sunday and with plans of having four two-hour sessions a week with focus on a few areas, Onyango wants his side to improve before gracing the big stage.
“We want to improve on our defence and the kick offs both when receiving and attacking,” he noted.
