Research indicates that development of cancer is greatly influenced by diet. There are several foods that are said to decrease the growth of cancer because they contain beneficial compounds.

According to Dr Pius Mwanja, a general practitioner at Lifelink Medical Centre in Ntinda, having more subcutaneous fat, the kind you can grasp with your hand (belly fat) is associated with a variety of health problems. In women, the fat is also associated with breast cancer and the risk of developing gall stones.

Grapes
Grapes contain a wide range of phytonutrients right from carotenoids to polyphenols. These phytonutrients help in preventing certain kinds of cancers and help in maintaining heart health.

Among polyphenols, resveratrol is known for inhibiting the formation of free radicals that could cause cancer and dilating blood vessels to ease blood flow and lower blood pressure. It is important to note that the highest antioxidant content is in the seeds and the skin.

Fausta Akech a nutritionist at Healthy U, says: “Grapes serve as a natural source of resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant which helps in weight loss benefits, and they also offer a small amount of satisfying fibre.
They help to avoid higher-calorie junk food because they will make you feel full after you have eaten them.”

Anthocyanins antioxidants in red grapes generate anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-cancer activities.

Pumpkin seeds
Akech says, “The seeds are also rich in beta-carotene and other antioxidants with cancer protective properties. These are also healthy for men as their oil blocks the growth of cancer in the prostate gland. It also contains zinc which contributes to male sexual health.”

Oranges
Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C and a good intake of this citrus fruit daily is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer as the antioxidant nutrient in them helps to prevent free radicals that cause damage to the body DNA cells thereby causing cancer.
Akech recommends daily intake of oranges saying it protects the body from lung, skin and breast, colon cancer. The vitamin C and antioxidants present are both important in building the body’s immunity.

The same antioxidant element in oranges protects the skin from free radical damage which is known to cause signs of aging and eating an orange daily helps your skin look younger.

Cauliflower
According to Dr Mwanja, Cauliflower contains a sulfur compound that is a cancer fighting nutrient, thereby slowing tumor growth, thereby reducing the incidence and rate of chemically induced tumors. It also inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells, including other cancer sthat may develop in the bladder, colon, liver, lung, and stomach.

Prevention
Cauliflower is a source of dietary fiber that helps in elimination of toxins from the body. The presence of sulforaphane in cauliflower protects the stomach lining from developing Helicobacter pylori bacteria thereby reducing the risk of abdominal disorders like stomach ulcers and colon cancer.
