KAMPALA.

Vipers’ president Lawrence Mulindwa defended the timing of Jorge Da Costa’s appointment four days prior to their Caf Confederation Cup against Platinum Stars by insisting the Portuguese coach is here for the long haul.

“For us it is the perfect timing as a club building for continental and other international competitions, we feel he is the right man to lead us. We are not looking at just the Saturday (today) game. That is not the point. The point is where we are moving and how best can we move,” he explained.

Despite the assurances, Da Costa 37, will be keen to make a bright start in his first game that will have the added impetus of the St. Mary’s Stadium opening.

“The problem for me I just want to win every game. I will try to win on my very first day,” he stressed at his unveiling.
Basing on team’s training sessions this week, Da Costa is expected to rely more on the technical advice of his predecessors Richard Wasswa and Edward Golola, who are now his deputies.

The pair had prior to his appointment embraced a sterner approach that has yielded two straight victories following four straight draws.

They scrapped through to this round on away goals after a 1-1 all draw away to Comoros’ Volcan de Moroni. Deus Bukenya, who scored the priceless goal, is expected to return to the side having been rested for the previous two games.

Striker Tony Odur dropped for the games against Express and Bul could lead the line having scored the opener and impressed in Sunday’s 2-0 Uganda Cup win over Soana.

They play a Platinum Stars side that is riding high on a three game winning sequence including Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Golden Arrows that moved them to eighth in the South African domestic league.

They progressed to this round with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Mozambican side UD Songo.
