In Summary
  • When you invite someone to your home, the first thing they see is your front door and windows. If you have dirty windows and doors, it will leave your visitor with a bad impression.

Keeping the exterior of your home clean can help boost its attractiveness. Doors become dirty from exposure to weather conditions, dirty hands or accidental spills. Dirty doors can make a house look deserted and worn out. Many people hate this chore and will often neglect their doors.

However, your visitors will always first notice your home’s exterior before getting to admire what is on the inside. A dirty exterior will leave a bad impression.
David Joel Nabeta, the field manager of Ultra Cleaning Company, says doors can easily attract dirt and should be cleaned more often. “It does not matter whether the door is made of glass, steel or wood. They all still need the same care,’’ he says.

Metal doors
Michel Nuvle, a welder in Bweyogerere, says metal doors are commonly used as front and garage doors. These doors are normally affected by outside elements as they often get rusty.
“Metal doors are among the most durable. These doors come in various types of metal such as aluminum, iron and steel. They hold up extremely well to impact making them highly durable,” he says.

Nuvle says unlike glass doors that are easily affected by dust, the biggest problem for metal doors is rust. It ruins the appearance of the door and diminishes its durability.
Removing rust from metal surfaces and repainting is the best way to keep them clean.

Scrape the rust
“Rust can be effectively removed with a wire. Gently scrub the rusted areas on the door surface. However, be careful not to scrub the door deeply as this may cause scratches,’’ he says adding, you can also repaint the door once you have removed all the rust.

Be aware of the discoloured spots on your door. This may signal rust, peeling off paint and coating from dust and other dirt. You should also keep your door free from moisture as this encourages rust.

Glass doors
Joan Mwima, a dealer in glass wear at Nakasero, says when the doors are made of glass it is important to clean them on a regular basis as they easily attract dust. Dirty glass can bring down the look and feel of the home. She says when cleaning glass, one will need water and detergent solution. While cleaning, one should keep in mind that the interior glass is as important as the exterior side of the glass and cleaning both sides is paramount.
“The sun can prematurely dry the window wash, leaving residue and streaks. Wait for a cloudy day to wash your windows and you’ll end up with a brilliant streak-free shine,” she advises.

Mistakes to avoid
• Dirt seems to build up in the corners of the glass making it difficult to get rid of. However, one can try using a cotton bud to reach such areas.
• When cleaning doors, use water and soap. However, do not leave residue and streaks.
Wooden doors : Henry Kasato, a carpenter, says wooden doors are common in most of the homes and they take a bit of maintenance to look nice. “If you have a wooden door, it will require more regular cleaning and maintenance than other materials,’’ he explains.
He says when cleaning a wooden door, use furniture polish or vanish so that you can achieve a fine glow. If you have a painted wooden door, he says, dilute your cleaning product with water because applying it directly to the door might cause the vanish to peel off.
• Try to dust your wooden doors once every week to keep them looking nice and to prevent stains from forming.
• If your door has old paint, remove it and apply new paint.
