KAMPALA. The national basketball team Silverbacks finished fifth at the six-team Molten Istanbul Cup following an 80-56 thrashing at the hands of tournament winners Cameroon in their final game last week.

Despite their standing that included two wins against Iraq and Bahrain from five games, coach George Galanopoulos was pleased with the team’s general performance.

“What we have seen from the squad after the first four games is a team that has not played together very long but has come together very quickly,” he said.

“So we are very happy with the effort that the team has given, the togetherness that they bring the willingness to share the basketball, to play defense to play hard and to play together,” he added of the team that includes three debutants.

The Silverbacks now turn focus to the second leg of the first round World Cup Qualifiers that start on Friday in Nigeria.
“We have to improve on limiting turnovers and making sure that we finish our offensive possessions and not allow the other teams to get shots off the transition,” he said.

He added: “Also rebounding, we are a smaller, faster team. what we need to do is work as a team in order to rebound the basketball especially if we are undersized against our opponents.”
