KAMPALA- Uganda match onto Grand Stade Marrakech in Sunday’s third match of the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (Chan) knowing that it will only be yet another registered appearance if they do not progress from the group on the fourth time of asking.
But to be in a better psychological shape for that opener against Zambia, a team they lost to 1-0 in the same tournament in Rwanda two years ago, a confidence building result in today’s friendly against Congo in Rabat before they proceed connect to Marrakech will do.
Nelson Senkatuka stepped off the bench in the second half on Saturday to nullify Camara Saidouba’s opener for Guinea by tapping home Paul Mucureezi’s pass for a 1-1 stalemate.
New Cranes coach Sebastien Desabre, who will be in charge of his second game since taking over late December, was impressed by his players’ attitude after they fought back.
But the Frenchman, who will send home two of the 25 players in camp after today’s final friendly, hopes to build onto the momentum from Guinea fight-back and start his first ever continental national team tournament and Uganda’s fourth straight Chan finals on the back of victory over Congo.
“This (against Guinea) game has given me a chance to assess players further which allows me to make a choice on the squad and line up,” said Sebastien ahead of today’s clash against Congo.
Some players that might have forced their way into Sebastien’s thoughts for today’s game are second half substitutes KCCA’s Mucureezi and Bright Stars’ Senkatuka, who combined to prevent the Frenchman from beginning his national team coaching career on a losing note.
Uganda, after Zambia on Sunday, face Namibia on January 18 before winding up their Group D matches against Ivory Coast four days later. Congo are pooled alongside Angola, Cameroon and Burkina Faso in Group D.
