KAMPALA. In the past a number of players have fallen out with the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) over failing to agree on who handles the bill when a player get injured while on duty. Many cases have ended with players having to dig down their pockets .

That trend has even forced some players out of the game with fear of having to deal with huge treatment bills once injury creeps in. Marvin Odongo while playing for the Rugby Cranes in Nairobi on Saturday found himself with a fractured glabellar bone and a fracture of the nasal complex plus maxilla and the Union`s response has been a heartfelt one.

In a statement signed off by URU general secretary Godwin Kayangwe, the local rugby governing body confirms Odongo has undergone surgery and that the sports ministry alongside URU reached an agreement of payment for the procedure.

“The Sports Ministry has been engaged and a decision has been reached to have the surgery done in Nairobi Hospital immediately. The Ministry and the URU have reached an understanding to pay for this procedure in Nairobi although these funds may not be accessible now since it is some process before this is completed,” reads part of the official communication.

Odongo is expected to fly back to Uganda and head to UMC Victoria Hospital, where the Union secured medical cover, to continue with his rehabilitation. The Union has also called upon well-wishers to contribute towards Odongo`s cause on +256777912029 (Godwin Kayangwe) in Uganda and +254728600181 (Benjamin Mugisha) in Kenya.
