Fruits: Dr Paul Kasenene, a nutritionist at Wellcare Health Clinic, says you can swap your sugar craving with fruits. Fruits such as mangoes, grapes, berries, bananas are naturally sweet and come with various health benefits. They taste sweet, high in fibre and low in sugar.
Regularly eating them may also help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Also, some fruits, especially berries, are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
Dates, highly nutritious and very sweet are a good source of fibre, iron and potassium. These would be a good substitute for soda
Sweet Potatoes: They contain mostly carbohydrates, fiber, vitamin A, C and potassium. Sweet potatoes are nutritious, sweet and filling.
Grains: Eating whole grains is linked to a longer, healthier life. This is because the grains contain manganese, selenium vitamins B, magnesium, phosphorus and iron. Their fibre content will help you feel full and reduce your sugar craving.
Vegetables: These may not be satisfying in the first place to soothe your sugar craving, including them in your diet regularly will be helpful. You may snack on carrots, beets in their raw form instead.
He says, “Adding vegetables to your meals can help prevent you from getting sugar cravings. Since vegetables are high in fibre, and low in calories, they are likely to improve your health and lower the risk of diseases such as heart disease and cancer.”
Avocado: These fatty little fruits are a great addition to the diet, helping you feel satisfied longer. It contains vitamin B and folic acid known to lower stress levels to make your mind feel relaxed. They are a good source of protein, healthy fats, and vitamin E thereby being a suitable and healthy replacement for your sweet foods.
Legumes: Beans and peas are great plant-based sources of fiber and protein. These will often make you feel satisfied to reduce hunger-driven sugar cravings.
Yoghurt: Yoghurt is rich in protein and rich in calcium and can regulate your appetite and control your cravings.
