A 10-day training camp prior to the 2017 Afrobasket had many of the Silverbacks players believing they stood a good chance of making the knockout stages of the competition.
That was not to be with the national basketball team falling just short after three close defeats to Angola, Central African Republic and Morocco. They will hope for a different outcome this time round as they prepare for the first phase of the World Cup qualifiers due February 23-25 in Mali.
The Silverbacks according to Grace Kwizera, the Fuba Vice President in charge of marketing are scheduled to travel to the West African country on February 16 for a brief training camp.
They will have to do so without George Galanapolous, who is not available at least until June in time for the second phase of the qualifiers.
Galanapolous who is also the assistant coach at Texas Legends was the Silverbacks head coach at the tournament last year.
Mandy Juruni and Omar Barajab are consequently expected to lead the team at the tournament where the Silverbacks require to finish among the top three teams in a group that includes the hosts, Rwanda and Nigeria.
Juruni alongside Brian Wathum and Ronnie Mutebi have been conducting training for the local based players summoned in preparation for the tournament. The team yesterday faced a select team from the league.
